Obama’s Legacy

And he said…. “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming America,” and the crowds roared with adulation. At the time, most of us wondered, but many did not bother to ask, “Exactly what did that statement mean?” All we knew was that this nation’s first African American president was making history.

On the domestic front, President Obama came into office inheriting a $10 trillion debt and an economy that was hemorrhaging 800,000 jobs a month – Some have pointed out that President Obama saved the U.S. from entering into a second depression. However, nearly eight years later, $18 trillion in debt and growing (not including the $100 trillion that is often not mentioned, in unfunded federal mandates), will the Obama administration’s legacy include the results of its profligate spending which will be bestowed upon our children at a cost of $54,000 each?

It is well known that food stamps and other entitlement programs are currently at record numbers. In 2012, participants in the food stamp program outnumbered the amount of working women in the United States, according to data from the Department of Agriculture and the Census Bureau. Increased regulations and taxes on businesses have further dampened individual job creation and therefore job prospects. Will Obama’s legacy include demonizing capitalism and destroying the entrepreneurial spirit?

And he crowed… “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it,” while reducing your costs – a little white lie to be sure. Not only has mine has gone up in cost, but my doctor left for greener pastures. Moreover, despite the massive size of the Affordable Care Act, a report commissioned by the Emergency Medicine Action Fund noted at least a 28% increase in ER visits since Jan. 2014. Armed with insurance and a doctor shortage, people opt to come into the ER (even for medication refills) – a pricey visit at best. Mental health visits to my ER have almost doubled – most psychiatrists don’t want to accept Medicaid payments. Will Obama’s legacy include another ineffective and costly governmental program?

This President has done yeoman’s work in promoting division between race and law and order. Just six months into his administration, Americans got a glimpse of this president’s view of law enforcement when he inserted himself into a local incident in Cambridge Massachusetts, involving a black professor and a white police officer. Without knowing all the facts, Obama famously proclaimed that the “police acted stupidly.” This “teachable moment” might have mentioned that the professor should have cooperated with police when asked to see an ID and yelling about racism. The thin blue line that protects us from the people who want to do us harm has gotten thinner. Will Obama’s legacy include being one of the most divisive presidents in the history of our country?

And he promised …..the most “transparent administration in history ever,” – well sort of – Obama –style! Most of us understand that President Obama’s open borders immigration policy does nothing but flood government services, while bringing in new Democratic voters. According to the Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR), this costs taxpayers $113 billion a year. Will Obama’s legacy include changing our country from a melting pot to a salad bowl,” with little no common bond?

Just a year or so ago, Obama called ISIS a JV team! Was our intelligence so poor at the time that our president who is privy to perhaps the best intelligence in the world did not know? How could he not? Indeed, it is hard to believe, less than one year later, that ISIS aka the JV team is active in all 50 states. Moreover, we are inviting refugees from war-torn Syria into this country with seemingly no concern about their intentions. Will Obama’s legacy include dereliction of duty as Commander-in-Chief to keep this country safe?

And he told us….”I will do everything I can to close Guantanamo Bay,” which seems to include not following the law requiring 30 days notice to Congress about the release of detainees – of which 30% have returned to the battlefield, or have continued ties to terrorism. Will Obama’s legacy include failure “to take care that the laws be faithfully executed?”

So, what exactly does Mr. Obama imagine his legacy to be? Or perhaps the more cynical among us believes, he just does not care – at least in the way we might imagine. In his Machiavellian world, the ends justify the means, no matter what the costs may be.
