Brigitta Mullican’s Testimony

Rockville City Council Community Forum

June 19, 2017

Dear Rockville Mayor and Council,

It saddens me to feel the need to testify about my disagreement with your anticipated approval of the “Fostering Community Trust Ordinance.”  I love Rockville even more than Germany, which is where I was born and legally emigrated from in 1956 with my family when I was a child.

I want to believe – and hope – that Rockville will follow the lead of Frederick County regarding the enforcement of our country’s immigration laws by cooperating fully with Federal Law enforcement to remove illegal aliens from our community.

Another milestone occurred in1956, since it is the same year that Rockville became a Sister City with Pinneberg, Germany. I would rather talk about the wonderful 60th Sister City Anniversary celebration in Pinneberg that I just participated in a week ago, but the seriousness with which I view illegal (undocumented) individuals is just too great.  Fostering community trust is not what comes to my mind when I read all that is proposed.

I agree with all the testimonies you have received about how all those who immigrated the proper way and those who wait in long lines to come to America should be respected.  There should be harsh consequences for those who come here illegally and try to steal our American citizenship. American citizenship is a great privilege, not a right, and certainly not something to look the other way when it is attempted to be stolen!

Good people need to be allowed to come here but only through the proper system.

“Illegal aliens” is the accurate legal term for those who enter illegally or who illegally overstay their term of the visa. While I have compassion for those who simply are trying to make a better life for themselves, those who come here illegally and commit additional crimes in addition to their illegal presence do not, and should not have the same rights as citizens and legal immigrants.  As soon as a person crosses the border illegally, they are subject to removal from our country without any need for a judicial warrant.

Keeping people safe means not tolerating the release of aliens that present a clear public safety threat back into our communities. ICE is committed to fostering positive collaboration with local law-enforcement partners, and welcomes changes from county officials that would prioritize public safety.
