Montgomery County Republicans Call Proposed County Budget “Nothing But a Band Aid and a Shell Game” Call for Budget Increases to Be Tied to Consumer Price Index

PRESS RELEASE

May 16, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Rockville, MD – The Montgomery County Republican Party

Chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Party, Reardon “Sully” Sullivan expressed his disappointment with the County Council’s proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget on the margins of the March 15 rollout. “The proposed budget is just a band aid and not the long-term solution that we need in order to get spending under control.  The proposed tax increases are more than twice the Consumer Price Index, which is simply not sustainable.  That is why Republicans have introduced an important ballot initiative to limit the spending of the county executive and the county council to the CPI. If that doesn’t pass, Montgomery County will continue to spiral into a spending abyss.”

Fellow Republican Stacey Sauter noted the proposed budget was “nothing more than a shell game, robbing Peter to pay Paul.  County residents demand greater transparency where the budget is concerned, particularly as Governor Moore continues to run deficits and is pushing more and more fiscal responsibility to the counties, expecting them to pick up the slack.”
