Delegate Arikan's Letter To Speaker Pena-Melnyk

February 4, 2026

Joseline Peña-Melnyk, Esq., House Speaker Maryland State House

100 State Circle

Annapolis, MD 21401

Madame Speaker,

I write today to share with you that while I do not take personal offense at your mistreatment of me on the floor yesterday, I do take offense on behalf of the more than 43,000 residents of Maryland whose voices I speak for.

As I was speaking on third reader about ICE Detention Centers on a bill about ICE and immigration, you repeatedly cut me off claiming I was not “on the bill.” ICE Detention is absolutely germane to the debate on HB444, albeit clearly embarrassing for Democrat House members, as they are solely responsible for those conditions due to 2021’s Dignity Not Detention bill.

HELP LEAD THE PARTY

The Republican Party through its elected board, the Montgomery County Republican Central Committee (MCGOP) is currently recruiting qualified applicants to fill  Committee vacancies for Legislative District (LD) 14 (Burtonsville), LD 15 (Potomac), LD 18 (Kensington), LD 19 (Gaithersburg), and LD 20 (Silver Spring). Eligible individuals must be registered Republican voters who reside in the appropriate area. You may check to confirm your LD by Clicking Here.

If interested in applying, please submit your letter of interest and political/professional resume to the MCGOP’s Party Secretary Lori Jaffe ([email protected]) NO LATER than 5 PM February 9, 2026.  Interviews will be scheduled at a later date.

Following interviews, if nominated to fill this vacancy the full MCGOP Central Committee will vote to consider the nomination at a date to be determined. If elected to serve, member volunteers are to be active participants in all MCGOP efforts: attend regular meetings, promote the election of Republican candidates, organize, and operate effective political organizations in your Legislative District, engage in fund-raising activities and build grass-roots political support within Montgomery County. You would fill the remainder of this term ending in November 2026. It is fun, challenging, yet rewarding work.

MCGOP reserves the right to not interview applicants as well as to keep vacancies unfilled.

YOUR FEEDBACK MATTERS

Thanks to those who sent feedback! Here are some comments that we received last week:

________________

Everyone who is here illegally must be deported. It's OK to do criminals first because they are a threat to our safety, but non-criminals found while looking for criminals must also be deported.
ICE is doing an amazing job. Those who are breaking the law trying to cripple ICE's ability to do its job must be caught and punished according to the law. I am disappointed that this is not being done well. Those funding it and the government officials encouraging it are getting a pass on their insurrection.

SULLY SAYS: LET'S KEEP WOOTTON WOOTTON AND CROWN CROWN

Reardon "Sully" Sullivan, candidate for County Council - District 1

I’m paying close attention to the public debate surrounding Superintendent Taylor’s proposed closure of Wootton High School. This matter warrants open and intellectually honest discussion within the public forum. I respect Council Members Yamil Hernandez, Adam Van Grack, and others who have shared their perspectives in a professional and thoughtful manner.

At the highest level, the mission of Montgomery County Public Schools should be the education of our children. That mission should not be subordinated to large-scale bussing initiatives intended to engineer social diversity, as referenced in Superintendent Taylor’s Boundary Study introduction video (see the 2:10 mark) HERE
