How could he, or anyone else under their control be expected to act as a check and balance on union contract negotiations? I am beyond astounded that most policy makers do not understand the role of an independent OIG reporting to the Board in negotiations. That IG would keep an impartial scorecard on what is affordable, and tell the Board, letting the chips fall where they may. Whether or not the Board acts responsibly is a different matter, but the OIG reports would be public unlike all the other non-transparent machinations in our county.

The budget just go harder, Montgomery Perspective, May 12, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne, MCTL: All, I repeat all contracts are subject to appropriation by the Council. Terminating contracts will have negative consequences to be sure, but like all things this is a trade-off that should weigh program efficiency and effectiveness issues. I was particularly struck by Madeleno's comments about health trust funding, below. Employee contributions should be increased. No brainer. Our total employee compensation is totally out of line with regional competitors and should be changed by the next CE based on a new analysis to update the last survey done in 2010.

Well done Adam, and timely. The only reason I'm testifying on Tuesday is to shame the 6 who voted to reduce MCPS budget cuts on the backs of low income home owners. Its outrageous that they even had a straw vote before Tuesday's hearing.

MCGEO to Council: Stick to core services, Montgomery Perspective, May 4, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne of MCTL: We need to allocate resources first to core services like education, public safety, water and sewer, roads, economic development and then worry about the rest. This doesn't include pay raises above market because the last comparative salary review in 2010 showed county employees make more than Federal employees and we know its gotten worse. I think we would agree with MCGEO that tax give aways be subject to the same review as spending.

MCEA warns of devastating cuts to MCPS, Montgomery Perspective, May 4, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne of MCTL: As for union head Stein's remarks, it would not be devastating, but is a threatening precedent for next year. By approving unanimously the MCGEO compensation package today it would appear the Council strategy is to dump the entire structural deficit on the next County Executive. Next year will be bloody, and all the players know the next round of union negotiations will be very austere.

Where is Silver Spring? Depends on who you ask. Greater, Greater Washington, May 2, 2026 Link Gordie Brenne of MCTL opines: Yes, I live in Silver Spring and our zip codes have over 300,000 residents, about one third of the county. But we don't get much love from the county's economic development machinations. Our schools house the achievement gap, and we are the biggest source of the county's low income population. Nearby Takoma Park selects our local and state primary candidates, and the Purple Line has destroyed our businesses. The good news is we're a hot bed of politics, even though most of our voters are pretty parochial about sustaining our legacy of poor economic performance as a largely bedroom community. Not to worry, this is an election year, and my hope, like the legendary silver spring, is eternal.
