Your message should go out to all the Democrats in the state.  They are the ones who need to read it.

I know the council voted to eliminated the $692 credit. That really hurts us retired folks who have been paying fair share for over 38 years in this county. We should be offered a break for all the years of paying into the pot. Not like we are having any more kids to educate into the local system. Thanks for nothing!! You wonder why all retire to Delaware and alike.

Like you, I read all the glowing announcements in which Montgomery County Council Members loudly congratulated themselves for their work in "lowering taxes!" It was a great message for an election year, surely intended to grease their paths to retaining power!

So, imagine my surprise when I discovered that my property taxes had suddenly, and surreptitiously INCREASED by $1,200  a whopping 17% increase over last year! How was that possible?

It turns out that the spending "Decrease" that they talked about was just a "LOWER INCREASE" in budget growth as proposed by the County Executive. So how was this campaign publicity scam concocted? It was made possible by two things that the Democrat Council Members didn't tell us about.

  1. The Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) reappraised home property values upward. That reappraisal created an automatic windfall increase in property taxes with no action required by the Council at all! The Council Members knew it but kept it quiet. Instead, they bragged that they had reduced the property tax "rate." Guess what? They knew that, even at their slightly reduced "rate," the upward reappraisal of property values automatically resulted in hundreds of dollars of tax increases on each homeowner.
  2. The County Council voted to eliminate the long-standing homeowners' "tax credit" from the budget. Eliminating that exemption automatically raised property taxes for homeowners also. That alone caused half of the total increase in property taxes for me.

When you vote in this year's election, keep in mind this sneaky, deceptive conduct of all the current Council Members who boasted about "lowering the budget," (but only slightly from the grossly inflated budget "request" submitted by the outgoing County Executive) and "lowering the property tax rate."

It all smacks of election year political collusion via the Democrat State Tax Assessor and the outgoing Democrat County Executive to assure the elections of Democrats who covet their power to tax and spend! It was just an elaborate smoke screen to give Democrat campaigners cover for a huge increase in taxes.
