THE PASSING OF JIMMY CARTER

By Dennis Melby

Many of us who live in Montgomery County have worked at some point for the federal government. When I was younger I was detailed to work at the White House for several Commissions set up by President Jimmy Carter. The President passed over the weekend at the age of 100.  Although I was never able to bring myself to vote for him I admired him and knew that he always intended to do what he considered was right, honest and best on the world stage. He had a great marriage, the best intentions and (after he left office) a great career as a former President.

I was able to host Mrs. Carter in Bethesda for an event for Rockville's  former Chestnut Lodge psychiatric hospital where she helped us raise awareness of the problems of mental illness. They were both staunch supporters of helping people and families in need. I was able also to work with Gerald Ford, and I never told him I had worked under the man who defeated him...I thought they didn't like each other. I was wrong, they were great friends. Much like today Carter led to Reagan, and Biden has led back to Trump.

My condolences go out to the Carter family. I'm glad he and Rosalynn are reunited.
