Why is signing up to testify like the 'Hunger Games'? by Nora Gordon, October 21, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne of the MCTL: We should all be grateful to have Nora providing an economist's perspective on MCPS issues. For us, the issue isn't getting more PTA voices to counterbalance union voices, but rather get both big special interest groups to acknowledge that improving low-income school academic achievement is the number one priority. This won't be easy for either group because they both thrive on one size fits all strategies in west county. Unions because this means higher pay for all members, not just in east county. The PTA because their active membership is predominately west county.

Maryland's energy affordability crisis is a crisis of leadership, Maryland Matters, October 8, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne of MCTL:
This writer gets it right. Maryland has the third highest electricity rates in the nation!!!!. Stupid renewable energy credits are one reason. Why? "Maryland requires electricity suppliers to obtain increasing amounts of qualifying renewable energy. When there are not enough qualifying renewable energy credits available to satisfy those requirements, suppliers have to make Alternative Compliance Payments (ACPs) instead. The cost for those ACPs flow directly down to the Maryland ratepayer through increased electricity rates."

The reason this pricing model didn't work is the criteria the PSC has been using to approved new projects had been heavily biased towards renewables. That's slowing changing and it was great to hear about Amazon's investment in Calvert Cliffs nuclear capacity increase.

WSSC Power outage puts 2 MD counties under essential water use warning, Patch, September 29, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne of MCTL: So, the interesting but untold story here is that WSSC is studying alternatives to the Potomac river for MoCo water users in the event of a prolonged drought or something else. The best alternative would be to add pipeline connections to MoCo from the Patuxent reservoir. Study is a work in progress, like WSSC itself. PS, they want a 7% rate increase next year.

Teachers union, MCPS move forward with bargaining, Montgomery Community Media, September 29, 2026 Link Comment by Gordie Brenne of MCTL: MCEA union boss pigs at the trough. They don't want accountability for performance, and taxpayers do. They don't want management to control their extra planning time. Taxpayers want a lower achievement gap. MCEA doesn't want higher compensation for east county teachers who need to spend more time communicating with parents and delivering interventions for struggling students. They don't want teachers to be accountable for parent communications, and will resist efforts to shift interventions to MS and HS kids.

Local rate payers should control any flush tax, not the state. Each county has a unique set of problems with sewage treatment, and different mix of water uses.
