A Cheap Fake Abortion Amendment?

Maryland "Right to Reproductive Freedom" Amendment

In 2023, the Maryland General Assembly passed a law (SB 798) placing the Maryland Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment on the November 2024 ballot. This amendment to the Maryland Constitution would go much further than the 1991 state law that gives women an unlimited statutory right to abortion for any reason through birth.

Many Marylanders believe this is just an attempt to bring voters from the far-left to the polls, as a charade that abortion rights are threatened. But it can be used to further degrade the ability of parents and guardians to do what's best for their kids.

The proposed amendment says: “That every person, as a central component of an individual’s right to liberty and equality, has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom, including but not limited to the ability to make and effectuate decisions to prevent, continue, or end one’s own pregnancy. The State may not, directly or indirectly, deny, burden, or abridge the right unless justified by a compelling state interest achieved by the least restrictive means.”

Problems with the amendment:

  • The amendment would invalidate health and safety laws that protect women and girls seeking abortion, like basic cleanliness regulations for abortion clinics.
  • The amendment would forever bar future attempts by our elected representatives to enact protective policies to restrict painful late term, partial birth, or dismemberment abortions or to limit public funding for these inhumane practices.
  • State lawmakers testified that the amendment would establish new transgender rights (since they are covered under the term “reproductive”) and authorize the government to use taxpayer dollars to fund and promote puberty blocking drugs and surgical mutilation of genitalia - even among children — without parental consent. Parents could be threatened with loss of custody for failure to comply.
