AS A SPOKESMAN FOR THE DC MAYOR - THANKS PRESIDENT TRUMP
By Dennis Brent Melby
No, not Muriel Bowser…but the first DC Mayor Robert Brent, my ancestor. Yep, we’re still here and I’m so heartened to see someone who’s actually taking city safety seriously.
The left-wing media, all the Democrat politicians and limousine liberals say “but crime is heading down!” So what? No number of murders are “acceptable.” No car jackings are “acceptable.” No crazy people left to live on the streets, no drug users left to live in squalor as prey or criminal perpetrators are “acceptable!” What’s the acceptable level of public disorder?
HOW MUCH CRIME IS "ACCEPTABLE"?
There was no home rule, DC was a federal enclave under the control of the national government – and beholding to it. When Thomas Jefferson appointed my ancestor in 1802 as the first mayor, he was a wealthy landowner, much of his property was incorporated into the new city. Brentwood was his home, and the family had already been here for generations. He was charged with everything; pave the streets, empower the police, open schools and markets, work to layout the city and start from scratch.
And even without voters he did a great job, was reappointed many times by President Jefferson and then President Madison, all the time taking no salary. Home rule is a recent concept, and has been used for some good but much abuse. Some great Mayors and councilmembers, some scoundrels. Even to the point where Mayor for Life Barry had his authority taken away until the Feds put things right again. In the meantime the Democrats even want to make it a State! Now, the Feds are finally putting things right once again, led by the President.
We’ll see what Congress does. My family has been here for generations, and the folks in DC deserve safe streets, clean government, great schooling and support for the police. (Remember when they painted DEFUND THE POLICE on Black Lives Matter Plaza?)
So yes, on behalf of Mayor Robert Brent – Thanks Mr. President! Keep up the good work for the residents of the District of Columbia and workers and visitors from across the country.
