Last week we were inspired by the celebration of our country’s 248th birthday. At that time, our founders developed a list of reasons why they sought to be free of the King of England’s rule. In this spirit, and with apologies to Thomas Jefferson, we offer our own Declaration of Independence from the rule of Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all citizens of Montgomery County shall have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That they shall have authority over their government. That the government shall not infringe upon the peoples’ authority over their own lives or the lives of their children. That all citizens shall have a county executive who represents them. That the executive shall see that all of the people can live safely in their communities. That the executive shall carefully guide the use of taxpayers’ money, in accordance with adopted county policy.
But when the executive shows that he has lost touch with (0:14) reality and puts outsiders’ interests above the interests of the people, we must declare our independence from his rule. We list below the reasons why we seek to hold him to two terms.
Through his Executive Order, he has created the conditions in which criminal illegal migrants have flooded into our county, causing great fear, great harm and even death among our people.
He has made friendly overtures to malevolent actors, who have been accused of human rights violations, asking them to establish businesses within our own borders.
He has sought to cut back funding for our police department. With many police officers leaving due to low morale and low pay, our county has seen an increase in crime.
He has removed the Student Resource Officers from our schools, making our children even more vulnerable to threats.
He has (1:49) supported the taking away of parental authority over what can be taught to our children.
He has failed to follow the Council’s own adopted fiscal policy and has caused the county to face a structural deficit.
He did follow outsiders’ policies without doing his due diligence to confirm that those policies would benefit the people and would be within the peoples’ ability to support them financially. He sought to impose additional taxes on the people to support his misguided vision.
He has promoted an initiative that favored his wealthy supporters while forcing the rest of the people to pay for it.
Because of all his actions listed above, we declare Marc Elrich to be unfit for the position of County Executive.
Marc Elrich has sworn to adhere to the Maryland Constitution, which states:
- Article 1.“That all Government of right originates from the People, is founded in compact only, and instituted solely for the good of the whole; and they have, at all times, the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their Form of Government in such manner as they may deem expedient.”
- Article 34. “That a long continuance in the Executive Departments of power or trust is dangerous to liberty; a rotation, therefore, in those departments is one of the best securities of permanent freedom.”
In keeping with the Maryland Constitution, we the people of Montgomery County embrace our authority, and with faith in our Creator to bring us a victorious outcome, pledge that we shall hold Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich to two four-year terms.
