Dennis Melby Reports

Let's Tone It Down

By Dennis Melby

After reading the article in the Montgonion about canceling Hispanic Heritage Day by the County Government it reminded me of the way so many folks in politics like to divide and conquer. They try to set one group against another, and tell you “…be afraid, be very afraid!”

Most foreign-born residents of MoCo, whether European, African, Asian or Hispanic are here legally, and want to partake in the American dream of continuing to build this country into a “shining city on a hill.” They want stability and legality and don’t want this country to become like the one they left. But entrenched leftist politicians often think the countries on the socialist side are better, more desirable and are a model of America. They are not.

Most Americans agree they don’t want serious criminals here, they want violent people caught and locked up, and if they’re here illegally they want them deported. But cancelling Hispanic events and telling the residents it’s because others hate you is a way of disingenuously turning folks again each other. Blacks against White, Hispanics against Anglos, Democrats against Republicans, Liberals against Conservatives…the list goes on and on.

Our schools often make students think they’re hated for their race, their gender, their place of birth, their orientation, their religion or their political beliefs. They are not! But if you constantly tell them that, many will believe it. If you can turn the kids against each other it conforms to the Union’s philosophy of needing more money for staff, administrators and counselors to deal with the students' fears. While test scores aren’t going up, anxiety is going through the roof.

Let’s stop with the hatred, the shaming, calling our neighbors horrible names that inevitably lead to more hatred and violence. Tone it down, get back to normalcy, and try to dial back the hate speech. We’ll all feel better for it.
