Potomac Women’s Republican Club Celebrates Historic Milestone
By Julie Krieger, President
The Potomac Women's Republican Club (PWRC) turned 60 last year and wanted to celebrate this milestone in their history by giving back to the community in a meaningful way. They decided to create the PWRC-Jean Roesser Scholarship, an annual award to be given to an area high school junior or senior for college expenses. The PWRC thanks students at Churchill High School and Wootton High School for their outstanding submissions this year. Participating students wrote a 400 to 600-word essay and addressed the prompt selected by the Scholarship Committee.
The winner was chosen by three committee judges.
We are proud to report that Wootton High School senior Abigail Russ was the scholarship recipient for 2019. Her winning essay addressed the prompt, "Who do you think had the greatest impact on the colonists' successful struggle and fight for freedom from the British in the Revolutionary War, and why?"
PWRC President Julie Krieger and First Vice President Sharon Whitehouse presented the check to Abigail at Wootton High School on May 16th. Principal Kim Boldon was in attendance as well. The school took a video of the presentation and played it during morning announcements the following day and throughout the week as well. Abigail Russ will be attending the University of Maryland and majoring in Journalism. The PWRC wishes Abigail much success at the University of Maryland and in all her future endeavors!
