Saturday, October 18, 2025, the Powerful Voice of the African Diaspora (PVAD) brought together Maryland GOP candidates and community members for a dynamic discussion on the socio-economic integration of the African diaspora in the United States. PVAD is dedicated to uplifting the socio-economic, cultural, and leadership potential of the African diaspora both nationally and globally, under the guidance of its President and Founder, Macial Keuwa. This gathering stood out for forging a meaningful connection between Montgomery County Republican Party and Maryland’s vibrant African diaspora.

PVAD President and Founder, Macial Keuwa

Five Maryland Republicans took the stage along with Macial Keuwa as PVAD Representative, sharing their visions and priorities with both the African diaspora and the broader Maryland community. The panel became a platform for open dialogue, where candidates tackled Maryland’s most pressing issues and sought collaborative solutions.

John A. Myrick, running for Maryland Governor and Dr. Brenda Thiam, for Lieutenant Governor, painted a vivid picture of the challenges facing Marylanders today. They pledged to spark real change and uplift living conditions across the state, stressing the urgent need to address economic growth, educational opportunities, and public safety for all.

John Myrick zeroed in on a key concern for the African community: neighborhood safety. He insisted that everyone deserves to walk freely and confidently in any neighborhood, at any hour. Chris Burnett, candidate for Congressional District 6, pledges to champion the well-being of its constituents. Drawing on his experience as a US Marine Corps veteran, he promised to bring the same dedication and protective spirit to his political service, assuring the community that he truly understands their everyday struggles. Delegate Latoya Nkongolo, trailblazing as the Black woman to run for Republican office in Arundel County and a thriving business leader, urged her peers to reject fear and self-doubt. She inspired the African community to embrace opportunity, dream boldly, and shape their own destinies. Delegate Nkongolo also shared her advocacy for school programs that empower parents to protect their children’s values and beliefs.

Yahu Blackwell passionately called for high school reforms that would equip students with real-world skills and practical knowledge, empowering them to take charge of their futures without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. He is determined to be a voice for Marylanders at every level.

The panel proved to be both enlightening and empowering, giving the African community a clear window into each candidate’s vision and how their policies could improve lives across Maryland.
