I first met Charles “Chas” Wirick over two years ago when he came to a Legislative District 18 meeting.  During this event, I noticed that Chas had a device with him that recorded everything.  At first, I was taken aback as to why he was using it, but I quickly learned that he had been profoundly deaf since birth and could not read lips.   Most importantly, I soon discovered his reason for attending that meeting.

During the week of May 5 – 12, there was a veritable explosion of gun control events in Montgomery County. First, there was an educational lecture aptly named Finding Common Ground followed by events sponsored by two local organizations, Moms Demand Action and The Interfaith Gun Violence Prevention Network. The next day we noticed that there was a Gun Violence Prevention Forum sponsored by Congressman David Trone, who represents western Montgomery County’s 6th District.

These days, it appears that the majority of young people in America are marching toward socialism. But don’t blame me for that.  When I was in college, I was elected Student Body President at Montgomery College.  It was enlightening.  Like most students I was fairly liberal, but since I was a Republican, I was always suspect in many eyes.

The Potomac Women's Republican Club (PWRC) turned 60 last year and wanted to celebrate this milestone in their history by giving back to the community in a meaningful way.  They decided to create the PWRC-Jean Roesser Scholarship, an annual award to be given to an area high school junior or senior for college expenses.  The PWRC thanks students at Churchill High School and Wootton High School for their outstanding submissions this year.  Participating students wrote a 400 to 600-word essay and addressed the prompt selected by the Scholarship Committee.

In the 1980’s when my teenagers wanted spending money of their own, they found jobs after school and during the summers. They worked in our town in pizza shops, the local movie theater, vegetable stands and as life guards. Minimum wage in those days was under $5.00 an hour.

On March 20^th, the Montgomery County Taxpayers League’s monthly meeting welcomed two of the newest County Council members, Gabe Albornoz (HHS and Public Safety Committees) and Will Jawando (Education and Planning/Housing/Econ Dvlp Committees) and listened to their thoughts about how they plan to govern. This event followed MCTL’s February meeting with Andrew Friedson and Evan Glass, our other new council members.
